Wiltshire contains a number of productive fossil hunting locations, primarily within Jurassic deposits. These rocks commonly yield ammonites, corals, and a variety of marine shells from well-exposed strata across the county.

Steeple Ashton is one of the most accessible sites, where fossils can be collected from ploughed fields along public footpaths, often producing well-preserved corals. Other locations such as Wootton Bassett expose fossil-rich beds, with nearby streams providing access to similar material.

Additional sites including Coate Water and Maud Heath’s Causeway are known for their Oxfordian deposits, which regularly yield ammonites and other Jurassic fossils.
