Pendower Beach combines a Devonian coastal section with much older fossil-bearing quartzite carried into the rocks as large blocks. The eastern shore offers elusive brachiopod impressions, while the raised beach and folded bedrock reward a careful geological visit even when fossils are scarce. The low shore east of John O’Groats pier exposes a Middle Devonian fish bed within the John O’Groats Sandstone Formation. Fish scales and fragments are more likely to be recognised than complete fish, but this small protected exposure has yielded specimens of lasting scientific importance. The limestone reefs and sandstone beds east of Scremerston reveal a varied Carboniferous coast. Around Sea House and Saltpan Rocks, crinoids, corals, brachiopods, plant remains and burrows record repeated changes between shallow seas, sediment-rich shorelines and rooted coastal ground.
