Join the UK Fossils Road Tour as we explore Charton Bay, East Devon, a remote and rewarding fossil hunting location reached by a long walk from Lyme Regis. This quiet stretch of coastline exposes a fascinating mix of Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous material, with fossils found in foreshore debris, slipped blocks, limestone, chalk rubble and shingle along the base of the cliffs. Charton Bay and the Humble Rocks area can produce a varied range of fossils, including Blue Lias ammonites such as Metophioceras, Psiloceras, Caloceras, Alsatites and Schlotheimia, Langport Member bivalves such as Plagiostoma, and Cretaceous echinoids including Micraster cortestudinarium, Micraster coranguinum and Echinocorys scutata. Finds are often scattered rather than concentrated, so careful searching is needed. From the Zig Zag path to Durlston Head, the western half of Durlston Bay reveals some of the finest and most complete exposures of the Purbeck Limestone Group in the UK. This section is more rugged and challenging, with steep cliffs, ledges and active rockfall zones, but it is also the most productive for serious collectors. The beds here are famous for yielding tiny mammal remains, reptile material, fish fossils and dinosaur traces, offering a rare glimpse into life in the lagoonal and coastal environments that existed at the end of the Jurassic period. While conditions can be difficult, this part of the bay is one of the most scientifically significant fossil localities on the Dorset coast.

Join the UK Fossils Road Tour as we explore Robin Hood’s Bay, Yorkshire, one of the most famous fossil hunting locations on the North Yorkshire coast. Most fossils are found either from the foreshore exposures during scouring conditions or in rocks, boulders and nodules. They can also be found after cliff falls. Search the rocks on the foreshore. Ammonites can often be found this way, but you will need the right tools. It is unlikely you will find fossils simply loose on the foreshore, as you normally have to work for finds at this location. Robin Hood’s Bay yields little during the summer months and it is often only after winter storms that finds are made. The north side of the bay can be rich in ammonite remains and these can mostly be found after cliff falls. Ammonites (Platypleuroceras, Tropidoceras, Acanthopleuroceras and Androgynoceras) can be found, along with the large bivalve, Pinna. Within the calcareous shales, exposed in the low tide reefs at the centre of the bay, you can find the ammonites, Arnioceras and Caenisites. The site consists mostly of Kimmeridge Clay from the Upper Jurassic. It is rich in fossils and with easy parking, toilets and refreshments nearby; it’s an ideal, safe location for the family. The site is productive in either direction from the access point. This location is also just a short walk away from other good sites and makes for an ideal day trip.
