Writhlington

Writhlington’s conserved colliery-spoil rock store preserves a remarkable late Carboniferous wetland community. Plant impressions and rare terrestrial arthropods have made it internationally important, but this finite scientific resource is visited through controlled arrangements: obtain permission and current joining instructions before travelling. West Wemyss

At West Wemyss, Carboniferous coal seams and plant-bearing shale can be seen along the shore east of the harbour. The Scottish Middle Coal Measures Formation records rivers, lakes and wetland forests, while redistributed mining spoil adds a different source of loose rock. Visit for geological observation and photography; collecting is not recommended while a reported refusal of permission remains unresolved.

Annbank

The River Ayr banks at Annbank preserve a well-studied record of Carboniferous plants, from fern-like seed plants and strap-shaped leaves to jointed stems and delicate reproductive structures. The fossil-bearing Scottish Middle Coal Measures tell a story of peat swamps, flooding and transported foliage, but steep, vegetated riverbanks make this a demanding locality where safe access and collecting permission must be established.
